End to Seal Trade

Baby Harp Seal

I have written earlier about seal hunting in these articles Canadian Baby Killers and No Seals Today. But we have a breakthrough today: the European Parliament finally voted on Tuesday to ban almost all trade in seal pelts and products. The Canadian government strongly criticized the European vote (duh!). This is a huge blow to thousands of residents of coastal communities in northeastern Canada that have long supplemented their income by clubbing hundreds of thousands (900.000 to be precise) of young harp seals to death each spring to harvest their spotted pelts.
Two major points are still existing in the embargo: export transmitted or transshipped through Europe is still allowed (which is not allowed in The Netherlands and Belgium). The embargo will be effective in 2010, then again before the commercial hunting season. Now let’s see how the WTO (World Trade Organization) will react!?

Digital Living (Part I)

Digital Living Network Alliance

I promised to write a review about my HDTV, but I realized that one post wouldn’t cover the subject so I divided them into parts. Today in Part I: DLNA. In 2003 the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) created a global collaboration with a collection of companies, all working together to help you create the home entertainment environment you’ve always imagined. DLNA created an interoperability framework of design guidelines based on open industry standards. Today more than 245 companies share a vision of a wired and wireless compatible and interoperable network of Personal Computers, Consumer Electronics and Mobile Devices in homes and offices, enabling a seamless environment for sharing and growing new digital media and content services.
For those of you who’ve paid attention, will see that one important player is missing in this digital lifestyle alliance: Apple. For some reason beyond me, Apple has her own agenda (Airport Express, AirTunes, AppleTV etc.) so there is no build in support for UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) even though this is based on open industry standards.

Universal Plug and Play

UPnP means you can plugin a device in you local network and if it’s build to communicate over the protocol it will be picked up by other devices in you network. Here’s a simple example: let’s say you’ve a computer with pictures stored on it (who doesn’t) and let’s say you’ve a HDTV. These devices can communicate among themselves. The TV picks up your computers Media Access Control address (MAC) and IP number and creates a controller in you access list. Now your TV can display you pictures, music or movies. On Mac OS X you need special software to make this happen (we made it happen under Mac OS 10.5). More on this later in Part II of Digital Living…
